Rosie Carney comes into young adulthood with the confessional tones of ‘Awake Me’.
At just nineteen Rosie Carney has already experienced more of the tumult of life than most her age. Through her raw poetical talent, her lived experience is channelled into her beautiful music and singing which, at times, recalls the vivid and imaginative folk ambience of Joni Mitchell.
After an unfortunate stint on a major label when she was still only at school, Rosie is continuing independently through London boutique Label X Novo (Phoria, Mt. Wolf) and savouring the freedom and license to express herself fully. ’Awake Me’ is her enchanting new single and it showcases all her talents with aplomb. From the swirling ambience permeating the track to the tender plucked arpeggio, Rosie proves a deft hand at creating sublime tonal flourishes to compliment her vivid imagistic lyrics and enchanting voice.
For Rosie to be getting on with her career she has had to overcome insurmountable odds. Having struggled with depression and anorexia half her life, music has guided her through it. In a year where discussion about mental health both in the music industry and in broader society has come a long way in removing the stigma and providing insight into sufferers, Rosie is determined to help others by being vocal about her own experiences through her music and her blog. ‘Awake Me’ is the kind of song that very few musicians can write. It’s a song about coming into life, and Rosie’s lyrics have a confessional ring to them: “I’ve been a fool for more than half of my life / I’ve tried to hide” she sings with disarming honesty. The rich images she conjures are reminiscent of Joanna Newsom’s literary flights of fancy as she evokes a world of disorder and illusion. It is no doubt that Carney is a beacon of hope to young people everywhere, and ‘Awake Me’ positions her as a phenomenal talent still just in her formative years.
